Old Photos of Bai Jingyu Eye Medicine Shop in Chongqing

　　“Bai Jingyu” can be traced back to the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. In Dingzhou, Hebei Province at that time, a man named “Bai Jingyu” opened the “Golden Sheep Eye Medicine Shop” in Dingzhou City. The “Golden Sheep Eye Medicine” he operated was famous for its miraculous effects. Legend has it that during a secret visit to the countryside, the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing Dynasty suddenly suffered from an eye disease, with his eyes red and swollen, and itching unbearably. After taking medicine without improvement, and with imperial physicians unable to cure him, he found Bai's pharmacy. Using the Dingzhou Bai family's eye medicine, it proved to be true to its reputation, curing the illness. Qianlong was overjoyed and immediately happily bestowed the inscription “Golden Sheep Pharmacy”. From then on, the Dingzhou Bai family's eye medicine became famous and widely circulated. Later, the owner was given an elegant title, “All-Purpose Little White Eye.”

　　In the early 1930s, Bai Ruiqi, the head of the Bai family, decided to expand into the south, establishing the Bai Jingzi Eye Medicine Shop at the entrance of Laofang Alley on Shengzhou Road in Nanjing, and later officially opening at No. 152, Baixia Road. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, it was temporarily closed until it reopened at No. 12, Zhuque Road, Nanjing in March 1938. The “Golden Sheep Eye Medicine” of that year was changed to “Bai Jingyu Eye Medicine” using the ancestor's name, and later renamed Nanjing Bai Jingyu Eye Medicine Shop.

　　In 1939, Bai Zemin, a descendant of the Bai family, changed the “Golden Sheep” trademark to the “Whale” trademark. In July, the Whale trademark received a 20-year valid registration certificate issued by the Trademark Bureau of the National Government.

　　In 1951, the head office moved from Hankou to Nanjing, obtaining a business license from the Nanjing Municipal People's Government's Commerce Bureau and a registration certificate for the “Whale” trademark from the Central People's Government's Private Enterprise Bureau, and was renamed Nanjing Bai Jingyu Pharmaceutical Factory.
